چکیده

A brief overview is given of the observations of accretion disks in X-ray binaries, discussing their geometry, their effect on the rotation period of the accreting object, their optical and X-ray spectra, time variability, and radio emission and jets. Some outstanding questions for disk theory are listed.

Advection-Dominated Models of Luminous Accreting Black Holes

It has been found that a class of optically-thin two-temperature advection-dominated accretion solutions explains many observations of low-luminosity accreting black holes. Here it is shown that these models give a satisfactory description also of higher luminosity systems, provided the viscosity parameter is large. The models reproduce the spectra of black hole X-ray binaries in the Low State,...

Hydrogen-Poor Disks in Compact X-Ray Binaries

We show that accretion disks in several compact X-ray binaries with hydrogen– depleted donors are likely subject to a thermal ionization instability, unless they are strongly irradiated. These disks are particularly interesting in that their MHDturbulent properties in the neutral phase may be quite different from those of standard, hydrogen–rich disks. subject headings: X-ray: stars – accretion...

Hydrodynamics of the Stream-disk Impact in Interacting Binaries

We use hydrodynamic simulations to provide quantitative estimates of the effects of the impact of the accretion stream on disks in interacting binaries. For low accretion rates, efficient radiative cooling of the hotspot region can occur, and the primary consequence of the stream impact is stream overflow toward smaller disk radii. The stream is well described by a ballistic trajectory, but lar...

N ov 2 00 8 A variable near - infrared counterpart to the neutron - star low - mass X - ray binary 4 U 1705 − 440 1

We report the discovery of a near-infrared (nIR) counterpart to the persistent neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1705−440, at a location consistent with its recently determined Chandra X-ray position. The nIR source is highly variable, with Ks-band magnitudes varying between 15.2 and 17.3 and additional Jand H-band observations revealing color variations. A comparison with contemporaneous X...

Transient X-ray Binaries in Elliptical Galaxies

Chandra observations of elliptical galaxies have revealed large numbers of Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) accreting at rates > 10M⊙ yr−1. One scenario which generates this Ṁ from an old stellar population is nuclear driven mass transfer onto a neutron star or black hole from a Roche lobe filling red giant. However, in our Galaxy, most of these systems accrete sporadically as transients due to ...
